I am inclined to share with you a somewhat open secret. For the last, let's say three weeks (give or take), I’ve taken to drinking a “green tonic” - on the daily. You may (or may not) have come across this “green tonic” on my Instagram stories, and if so, thank you for your questions and interest, as it has (at least in part) inspired this post.
Truth be told, the “green tonic” open secret goes back a bit further than three weeks, in fact, I happened to come across a similar concept on Kayla Itsines’ Instagram feed, although her feature was rather quick and did not specify detailed quantities of the ingredients used. Using that as a base, I thought it apt to use one teaspoon of each of the ingredients (anything more seemed excessive), with the “green tonic” essentially consisting of the following:
1 tsp Matcha powder
1 tsp Turmeric powder
1 tsp Apple cider vinegar
250 ml water (a glass of water)
At the get go, let me add that you’re at liberty to pretty much any green powder that suits your fancy (in my case, Matcha), but Moringa powder is as effective and beneficial. Both Matcha and Moringa are rich in antioxidants (1 cup of matcha = 10 cups of green tea), boost your metabolism, and most importantly, is excellent for naturally cleansing and detoxing your body. [For those living in South Africa, Wellness Warehouse has a huge variety - and is often my go to].
On to the next one... turmeric (golden) powder - this gem, despite having quite a pungent taste and colour, contains numerous natural healing properties that has been known to many for centuries, such as anti-inflammatory components and antioxidants, which are proven to revive your skin by bringing out that natural glow, repair acne scarring and help minimise the appearance of pores.
Powders aside, time for the ingredient that’ll inevitably make your face cringe - apple cider vinegar. Sour/ acidic taste aside, apple cider vinegar has much to offer. For instance, 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar helps to reduce belly fat, weight-loss (by making you feel full) and lowers blood triglycerides. In and amongst all of that, it is brilliant for controlling high cholesterol levels and keeping them at a reasonable level. It’s worth noting that consuming apple cider vinegar is somewhat of a marathon - in that results will show after about 12 weeks, so keep going!!!
From my personal experience, I’ve found that a daily dose of this green tonic to be an invigorating boost to my metabolism, and doubled up as a serious (natural) energy boost. So far, I’ve found this green tonic to work best when consumed at least 5 days a week - with remarkable differences in my skin, which has cleared up quite a bit! All things considered, it’s worth biting the bullet (i.e. the very strong/ bitter taste), because the results are phenomenal.
